AWOL aims to provide visitors with tours that foster interaction with the host community and landscape, creating a holistic and personal insight into urban South Africa. In 2002 AWOL Tours initiated a bicycle tourism programme in the Masiphumelele community of Cape Town in conjunction with the Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN), a non-profit organisation. Supporting the promotion of the bicycle in all of its forms, the AWOL tourism project in Masiphumelele makes use of recycled bicycles, allowing guests to interact with the local community from the bicycle seat. The project has proven to provide real, lasting benefits for the local people; local economy is stimulated and developed as tours include visitits to a wide range of local small businesses.
On the forefront of responsible tourism since 2002 and Fair Trade Tourism Certified, AWOL also supports local environmental organisations; visits to wine estates that are members of the ‘Biodiversity Wine Initiative’ are arranged, and groups are guided as to which seafood is green listed by South African Sustainable Seafood Institute (SASSI).
